I Found It!
In 2002, I dropped off my son at nursery school for a few hours every week, and embarked on a mission to find something that was wholly mine. I wanted to discover something beyond being a stay-at-home mom, wife, and friend - all things I was blessed to be! It would have to be something that I could continue to do long after my children "left the nest." Something which allowed for creative expression and, hopefully, an avenue to become a deeper part of my community. Little did I know that I would find that special "thing" by listening to the long lost yearnings of my third grade self.
I'm at a potter's wheel, my small hands clasped around the whirling lump of clay. I create a small, chunky bowl and paint the vessel with a rainbow of underglazes; I can hardly wait to see the finished product. I prize this creation, and keep only my most treasured things in its hold. I want more time at the wheel, but watercolors and collages and popsicle stick creations are waiting to be born.
Somehow, I blinked my eyes and I found myself to be 38 with no formal training in art whatsoever. While staring at a local catalogue of adult classes, I decided to sign up for Introduction to Ceramics. There, I found it. I found a creative outlet I had been missing for decades, a community of amazing women, dear friends, and something to call my own.
